Director of Strength & Conditioning

Alex Cherne is the director of strength and conditioning for Dickinson State University in Dickinson, North Dakota. He joined the Sanford Sports Performance team in April 2026 and is a Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist (CSCS) through the National Strength and Conditioning Association (NSCA).

Cherne received his Master of Business Administration degree from Newberry College and his Bachelor of Science degree in kinesiology and exercise science from the University of Utah.

He has coached comprehensive programs in a variety of sports. His previous experience includes working as a strength and conditioning intern at the University of Utah and as an intern and lead intern at the University of Mississippi. He also worked as a graduate assistant strength and conditioning coach at Newberry College in Newberry, South Carolina.

Cherne believes the values you learn in the weight room and on the field influence your life down the road. Hard work, determination and how you approach difficult situations all translate into real-world situations. His coaching has led to several college and conference championship wins in several sports, including football, field hockey, track and field and wrestling.

He joined Sanford Sports because of the high priority they place on the continued physical and mental development of athletes. According to Cherne, sports offer the best classroom for life. He enjoys helping athletes learn and grow from their experiences.
