Tenth annual Hoop City Classic features top-ranked prep stars and teams

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. – Some of the top high school basketball players in the country are scheduled to play in the tenth annual Hoop City Classic taking place at the Sanford Pentagon in Sioux Falls and the Corn Palace in Mitchell.

First Dakota National Bank is the title sponsor for the 29-game schedule that features high school and college basketball programs from eight states Dec. 27 – 29. The Corn Palace will host 19 games during the three-day event, while the Pentagon’s Heritage Court will host 10 games.

Notable players and teams include:

  • Mason Miller: The son of former NBA player Mike Miller is a four-star recruit ranked 69th in the class of 2021. The power forward has offers from Memphis, Creighton, TCU and Florida.
  • Matthew Mors: The Yankton High School star is the highest ranked player in South Dakota and 26th ranked power forward in the class of 2021 according to Mors led the Bucks to a state title as a freshman. He recently committed to Wisconsin.
  • Jerrell Colbert: The four-star recruit is the 39th-ranked player on ESPN’s Top 60 for the class of 2021. Colbert plays for Cornerstone Christian High School in Pasadena, Texas. ranks Colbert as the No. 4 center in his class. He has offers from 17 schools including Texas Tech, Memphis, Texas, LSU and Minnesota.
  • Tre White: The four-star recruit verbally committed to Kansas this summer. The shooting guard is the 37th ranked player in the class of 2022 according to White plays with Colbert at Cornerstone Christian.
  • Alden Applewhite: A three-star recruit from the class of 2021, Applewhite is ranked in the top 150 in the country. The small forward, who plays for Houston (Tennessee), has offers from Mississippi State, Georgetown, TCU, Texas A&M and Ole Miss.
  • DeLasalle (Minnesota): The powerhouse boys basketball team from Minneapolis has won 24 state tournaments including seven of the last eight Class 3A titles.
  • Lynn English High School (Massachusetts): The Bulldogs won the Massachusetts Division 1 state championship last spring for the first time in eighty years. Antonio Anderson, the head coach of the Bulldogs, played collegiately for Memphis and was a part of the 2008 Final Four team that lost to Kansas in the championship game.
  • High school girls programs include Yankton, Minneota (Minnesota), Sioux Falls Christian, Mitchell, TCA (Minnesota), Harrisburg, Luverne (Minnesota), Sibley East (Minnesota). Boys teams are Lower Brule, TCA (Minnesota), Gregory, Breckenridge (Minnesota), Bridgewater-Emery, Collierville (Tennessee), DeLaSalle (Minnesota), Cornerstone (Texas), Yankton, Lynn English High School (Massachusetts) Mitchell, Houston (Tennessee), White River, Howard, Mitchell, Mitchell Christian, Hanson, Aberdeen Christian, Canistota, Lyman, Viborg-Hurley, Northwestern, Tea, Sioux Falls Washington, Sioux Falls Christian, Brandon Valley, Huron and Central Minnesota Christian (Minnesota).

The Gary Munsen Classic, named in honor of Mike Miller’s high school coach who led Mitchell to 34 state tournament appearances, nine state championships, 18 Eastern South Dakota Conference titles and five state runner-up honors, will be played Dec. 27-28. Mitchell will play Houston (Tennessee) in the first game on Dec. 27 at 8:30 p.m. at the Corn Palace. Yankton and Houston (Tennessee) will meet in game two of the Classic at 8 p.m. on Dec. 28 at the Pentagon.

Four college men’s basketball teams will also play four games at the Corn Palace as part of the Doug Martin Classic: Morningside (Iowa), Dakota Wesleyan University, Trinity (Illinois) and Southeastern (Florida). Doug Martin is the former head coach at Dakota Wesleyan, where he led the Tigers to four conference titles and was named conference coach of the year three times.

The Hoop City Classic Holiday Youth Tournament for boys and girls in 3rd-8th grade will take place Dec. 27-28 at the Pentagon. Entry fee is $195 per team. Coaches and players will receive free admission to the Hoop City Classic at the Pentagon on Dec. 28. Register online at
